My Approach to Therapy

Picture
Clients have found my style to be relaxed, honest, accepting, respectful, spontaneous, intelligent, creative, and compassionate.

Therapy is a process and can help calm the storm,  allowing room for self discovery and positive change. Whether we are working short or long-term, we will allow each session to move in the direction needed at that time.

I come from a client-centered perspective and I believe each person is the expert on their own lives. My role is to collaborate with you on the journey of healing and remembering who you really are; identifying and honoring  your unique strengths.

As your witness, I will offer my presence, knowledge and deep listening, as well as provide you with experiences and skills aimed at assisting you in accessing your innate ability to heal and to live in alignment with your own self-identified values.

Therapy is a collaborative process and relationship is key.  Therefore I feel it is essential to create a safe and empowering environment that utilizes authenticity and honesty as pathways toward growth and self awareness. You will have full permission to be however and whomever you are without being judged.

Although I work in many areas, I have more extensive experience in the following areas (not in any particular order):
  • Self-worth and clarifying self-identity (Who am I?)
  • Anxiety and depressive feelings
  • Complex Trauma and PTSD (including adult and childhood physical, sexual and emotional abuse or neglect, as well as other life-impacting experiences).
  • Addiction recovery support and relapse prevention
  • Grief and loss
  • Creativity and creative blocks
  • Life transitions or career changes
  • Relationships (with family of origin, romantic partners, friends, etc.)
  • Spiritual or religious crossroads and deepening
  • Gender or sexual identity concerns (yours or a loved one)
  • Sexual orientation or related LGBTQQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer or questioning) concerns

From a client who was struggling with creative blocks and personal empowerment: "I thoroughly enjoy my meetings with you. You have helped me learn so much about myself in the past few months. The tools and knowledge that you have given me, or helped me to discover, during our sessions, I use and think about all the time. "

Modalities I use include, but are not limited to:
  • Mindfulness and mind/body based approaches
  • Talk therapy for inquiry and self exploration/life narratives
  • Expressive Arts Therapy (click here)
  • Deep play and other creative, spontaneous, experiential modalities
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) link
  • Transpersonal and Archetypal/Metaphoric/Symbolic Psychology
  • Feminist Multi-Cultural Perspect - I approach therapy from a feminist-multicultural lens, taking into account internal and external environments, exploring and considering the intersection of race/class/gender/culture/oppression/ecology and the interplay of these on self, relationships, spirituality and ecological systems. Acknowledging and understanding these influences are essential and will be integrated into our work as they arise.
If you do not see your "reason for therapy" on this list,
please contact me to see if I may be able to provide
what you need or offer a referral.
